Gwin Stitt was chosen to fill the District 7 school board vacancy at Monday night’s meeting of the Tipton County Commission.<\/p>\n
Richard Gray, who was elected to the position in 2024, resigned this summer before his term expired in two years. State law allows a county’s legislative body to appoint a replacement to serve until voters choose a successor at the next general election.<\/p>\n
Stitt, a former educator, was the only person nominated by commissioners for consideration.<\/p>\n
It was expected that Mike Scott, who works as a general manager at Rose Fabrication, would also be nominated. Kirk Winberry was interested in being nominated as well, but announced last week he was withdrawing his name and putting his support behind Scott.<\/p>\n
“After multiple days of prayer and through my conversations with Mike, I became convinced that he is the strongest candidate for the position. I decided that withdrawing my name from consideration would give someone with the same beliefs that I have the best opportunity to win the seat,” Winberry said in a post on Facebook. “Mike is a strong Christian conservative with many years of professional experience that closely aligns with the needs and responsibilities of the School Board.”<\/p>\n
Scott said if appointed, he would serve with faith, integrity, sound judgment, and a strong work ethic.<\/p>\n
“I will listen to parents, educators, students, and our community while working to ensure that Tipton County Schools provide a safe and effective learning environment for every student, including my own grandchildren. I also believe in strengthening strong family values and upholding the Christian principles that have long guided our community.”<\/p>\n
It was not immediately known why Scott was not nominated during the meeting.<\/p>\n
Speaking after the vote, Stitt thanked commissioners and said the county’s public school system holds a special place for her.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy heart is full, and y’all know, or the people that do know me here know that our public school system is so dear to my heart,\u201d she said. \u201cI’m an open book, and I want everyone’s input. I want our system to be the best that it can be, and I appreciate everyone’s vote.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stitt invited constituents to reach out to her directly with any concerns going forward. Her term will expire in 2028.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
