One of the drivers involved in a Wednesday morning accident near Brighton High School has died, Brighton Police announced on social media.
At approximately 7:45 a.m., police were dispatched to Highway 51 South to respond to a wreck that happened in the construction zone in front of the landfill involving a Tipton County Schools bus and a black truck.
The driver of the truck, whose identity has not yet been released, was transported to Regional One in Memphis for treatment, where she later died due to injuries sustained in the wreck.
There were no students on the bus at the time of the accident.
Brighton Police Chief Blaine Max said this remains an ongoing investigation. Witnesses and anyone else with information is asked to contact the police department at 901-476-8661 or Central Dispatch’s non-emergency line at 901-475-4300.
Tipton County Schools Superintendent Dr. Rebekah Byrd said the district extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of the driver.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time. We remain committed to cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues.”
Concrete construction barriers were placed in the right lane of southbound Hwy. 51 in mid-August in preparation for the construction of turn lanes.
