Tipton County’s Legislative Body is scheduled to fill a vacant seat on the county school board, re-appoint the county’s public works director to another four-year term, and consider transferring three acres of county land to the local emergency communications district when it meets Monday night.
It’s the single biggest item on a fairly light week of local government meetings across the county. Here’s what’s on the table this week.
Monday, Aug. 17
Tipton County Finance Committee — 5 p.m., Administration Building, 103 E. Pleasant Ave., Covington
The Finance Committee is a small group of county commissioners who review money matters — bills, budget transfers and financial reports — before passing recommendations on to the full County Commission the same evening. No agenda had been posted online as of publication, so it’s worth checking the county’s Agendas & Minutes page or calling 901-476-0200 closer to the meeting for specifics.
Tipton County General Welfare Committee — 5 p.m., Justice Center, 1801 S. College St., Covington
This committee handles a mix of quality-of-life and administrative matters for the county and, like Finance, reports its recommendations to the full Commission later that night. No agenda had been posted online as of publication.
Tipton County Legislative Body (County Commission) — 6 p.m., Justice Center, 1801 S. College St., Covington
This is the county’s full elected legislative body — the group of commissioners who vote on county-wide business. This meeting was moved from its usual second-Monday slot. The posted agenda includes:
- Filling a vacancy on the Tipton County School Board representing District 7
- Re-appointing Shannon Reed to another four-year term as county Public Works Director
- Re-appointing Russell Bailey as the county historian
- Adopting a strategic plan for the West Tennessee Regional Utility Authority, a regional water and utility partnership
- Considering a transfer of three acres of county land to the Tipton County Emergency Communications District, which runs the county’s 911 dispatch operations
- Reports from the Finance, Public Works and General Welfare committees, plus an update from the Sheriff’s Department
Atoka Municipal-Regional Planning Commission — 6 p.m., Town Hall Board Room, 334 Atoka-Munford Ave.
This is the town board that reviews signage, subdivisions, and other development requests inside Atoka. This meeting is livestreamed and archived on Atoka’s YouTube channel. The agenda includes:
- Two sign permit requests, for Edward Jones and Collier Realty
- Project updates on a shared stormwater agreement for the Ace Hardware site, screening requirements for a Comcast structure, driveway and sidewalk changes at Atoka Express, and a tree buffer requirement for the planned Newbury/Heyward Park Apartments
Mason Board of Mayor and Aldermen — 6:30 p.m., Mason Police Department

Tuesday, Aug. 18
Covington Finance & Administration Committee — 4 p.m., Lower Level Conference Room, Covington City Hall, 200 W. Washington Ave.
This committee reviews financial and administrative matters for the city before they go to the full Board of Mayor and Aldermen. This meeting is streamed and archived on the City of Covington’s Facebook page. The agenda is mostly informational updates:
- A Human Resources report from Director Cody Bumpus
- An update on the Broylin Memorial project from City Attorney Rachel Simmons
- An update on the Federal Cotton Compress property from Codes Compliance Director Lessie Fisher
- A heads-up on Isaac Hayes Day and a separate Boys and Girls Club event planned at the Civic Center
Wednesday, Aug. 19
Tipton County Election Commission — 3 p.m., 113 E. Church Ave., Covington
The Election Commission oversees the county’s elections. The agenda includes:
- Certifying petitions from municipal candidates
- Certifying the results of the August State Primary/County General Election
- Certifying the payroll for poll workers from the August 6 election
- Locking ballot boxes ahead of the November general and municipal elections
- Appointing poll workers for the November election
Thursday, August 20
Munford Parks and Recreation, Public Safety and Mayor’s Cabinet Committees — 4 p.m., City Courtroom, 70 College St.
