Randolph, Tenn., now little more than a few markers and memories along the Mississippi River, was once one of the busiest ports in West Tennessee. In the early 1800s, it rivaled Memphis as a shipping hub — with steamboats like the Elenora docking at its harbor to load and unload goods bound for markets downriver.
Perched on the second Chickasaw Bluff, Randolph was known for its excellent harbor and steady stream of river traffic. At one point, as many as 18 steamboats arrived in a single week, carrying everything from cotton to passengers.
Over time, flooding, the Civil War, and shifting trade routes led to Randolph’s decline. Today, only a few traces of the town remain, but its story is a powerful reminder of how vital the Mississippi once was to Tipton County’s economy and growth.
